  • Notes
    • Susan E. Holley, the first wife of Edmond Young Chastain, was born in South Carolina, most probably in Anderson County as family tradition relates. Susan's mother was Margaret Holley, Margaret's maiden name is unknown although Elam has been suggested by a few compilers, no source known. Susan married Ed when she was quite young, either 15 or 16 probably around 1846, and by tradition they were married in South Carolina. Little is known about Susan's father, his given name is unknown and it appears that he may have been dead by the mid 1840's. Margaret Holley is listed among the purchasers of the estate of Jane Holley who died 04 Jan 1844 in "Pendleton Dist. and Anderson Co, SC Wills, Estates, Inventories, Taxes, and Census Records". Jane Holley appears to be the widow of Sion Holley and the grandmother of Susan. Jane's is the only Holley household recorded in the 1840 census for Anderson County, on page 102, the same page as John Chastain, the probable father of Ed Chasteen. Likewise, in 1830 the only Holley household recorded in Anderson County was that of Sion Holley on page 191.
